Help Michelle Get the Care She Needs
Mayo Clinic has approved her. The window to act is open.
Michelle's medical situation requires urgent attention.
The clock is running
Michelle's medical situation requires urgent attention. After a thorough review of her case, Mayo Clinic approved her in October for an appointment with their Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine department — one of the most respected programs of its kind in the world. That approval is valid for six months, which means the window to act is already open and the clock is running.
Before any treatment can begin, Michelle must first undergo a bone marrow biopsy to help specialists understand exactly what she is dealing with. At Mayo Clinic, the cost of reaching a diagnosis alone is estimated at approximately $35,000. If treatment is needed — and depending on what the biopsy reveals, it very well may be — costs could climb into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. For a 13-year-old girl in the care of a nonprofit ministry, those numbers are impossible to reach without help.
Her care team is doing everything they can to be thoughtful and resourceful. They are currently exploring the possibility of having the biopsy performed in Manila — either at St. Luke's Medical Center or Makati Medical Center — as a way to significantly reduce costs before Michelle makes the trip to Mayo Clinic. Mayo has confirmed it will review test results conducted at outside facilities, which gives the team hope that this approach could work. However, there is a chance that Mayo's specialists may still need to repeat the biopsy upon her arrival to meet their own diagnostic standards.
In the meantime, Michelle's first medical bills have already started coming in. The financial need is not theoretical — it is here, it is real, and it is growing.
